From the Anthology Jacked, Gregory Jeffers’ story “Frostbite” has been nominated for the 2023 Best American Mystery and Suspense Series. Set in pre World War II Montreal, it is the tale of a wet-behind-the ears attorney and his first client, a former high fashion model accused of murdering her gangland boss boyfriend after her disfigurement in a train derailment. Noir at its best, hard-boiled and tragically romantic.

“I loved this—I couldn’t put this down. The language is lovely … Above all, this speaks to the anxieties many in our country are feeling right now about heading toward absolute Armageddon without speaking to a specific political leaning, which makes it open to the reader’s interpretation and, therefore, absolutely universal. We also don’t know what happened or why, which keeps this a simple, clean tale of human survival in the wake of disaster. I don’t know how you did this, but you NAILED every emotion balls-on RIGHT.
